Provocative Contracting

A quick user’s guide:

Use the scales from 1 to 10 to help gain insight into each of the criteria listed.

Assuming that you are seeking to move towards newness, emergent outcomes and potentially addressing failure, utilise the solutions focus “scaling” technique. Example: “Oh, ok, why did you choose 6 and not 5? What opportunities lay within moving one step towards 10?”

PS: Thanks to Viv McWaters for the last criteria on failure!

In development work, which is what I’m mostly involved with, a willingness to accept failure along with experimentation are key to sustainability. Unfortunately donors don’t respond well to not achieving pre-determined outcomes.
